The Defy El Primero 21 is Zenith's engineering answer to the question of what the El Primero architecture could do if it stopped time-sharing with the going train — a true 1/100th-of-a-second mechanical chronograph achieved by running two entirely separate regulating organs under one dial. The timekeeping side beats at 5Hz (36,000 vph), itself the historic El Primero cadence, while a dedicated second escapement drives the central chronograph hand at a remarkable 50Hz (360,000 vph), completing one dial rotation every second. Each gear train is fed by its own mainspring barrel — 60 hours for the time, roughly 50 minutes for the chronograph — so the high-frequency sprint of the stopwatch never robs the daily running of torque. In matte black ceramic with a skeletonized dial, the 9004 architecture is on full display at the 6 o'clock aperture, making this reference one of the most horologically significant chronograph releases of the post-LVMH Defy era and a direct descendant, three generations on, of Charles Vermot's 1969 original.
